A COOL, EASY WAY TO HELP

1) WHY HELP?

Have you ever, as I have many times, passed right by a homeless person on the street, felt sorry for him or her, but chosen not to help?

Maybe we didn't have the time. Maybe we didn't have the money at the time. Maybe we had the money, but were afraid to give it to someone who might have spent it on alcohol or drugs. Maybe we just believe that most homeless people look healthy enough to work and should be doing that like anyone else instead of begging on the streets.

Maybe we did give some money, but were afraid to try to offer additional help, because we didn't know the person's history and what his or her reaction might be. Or maybe we were afraid of being attacked or robbed. So, after handing him or her the money, we walked away from the issue.

Whatever our reasons to have chosen not to get involved (and let me be the first to admit that all the reasons above and many more have crossed my mind at one time or another), the bottom line is the old saying: until we walk a mile in other people's shoes, we can't judge them. We can't know the circumstances who brought them where they are. In addition, the face of homelessness has changed: a lot of hard-working people are just one pay check away from becoming homeless, and many do, and sometimes along with their spouses and children.
